Inlays and Onlays in Mill Woods
If you have an older silver (amalgam) filling that is failing or if a tooth requires more support than a standard filling can provide, a stronger restoration may be needed. While crowns are a traditional option, inlays and onlays offer a more conservative approach—strengthening the tooth while preserving as much natural structure as possible.
Inlays and Onlays
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are sometimes called “three-quarter crowns” because they are larger than a filling but smaller than a full crown. These restorations are ideal for:
- Replacing large, leaky, or failing fillings
- Reinforcing teeth with significant structural damage
- Preserving natural tooth structure while avoiding a full crown
Made in a dental lab, inlays and onlays bond closely to the tooth, providing strength and durability while blending naturally with your smile. Most are crafted from high-quality porcelain or ceramic, colour-matched to look seamless with surrounding teeth.

Inlays and Onlays
Your Treatment Experience
Since inlays and onlays are custom-made, treatment typically takes two visits:
- First Visit (about 1 hour): The tooth is numbed, old filling or decay is removed, and the tooth is shaped. An impression is taken and a temporary inlay/onlay is placed.
- Second Visit (20–30 minutes): The permanent inlay/onlay is bonded securely to your tooth for long-term strength and function.
To ensure your comfort, Arch Dental also provides sedation options to help you feel relaxed throughout the process. Our goal is to create a restoration so natural that you can’t tell where the tooth ends and the inlay/onlay begins.
